ADOPT A NATIVE ELDER (ANE) PROGRAM
Founder - Linda Myers
Salt Lake City, Utah, USA.
Program Description
"The Program got its start in the 1980's during the turbulent years of the Hopi-Navajo land dispute which ultimately resulted in 10,000 Navajos being relocated from their traditional homelands. During those times there were many Elders facing severe hardships and deprivations. When Linda Myers became aware of this desperate situation it was food more than anything else that these people needed for their survival."
"We are a trusted humanitarian organization focused on delivering food, medical supplies, firewood and other forms of Elder support. Respecting the tradition and dignity of Navajo Elders, we create relationships to honor and serve the Elders."

Through The Adopt a Native Elder Program sponsors provide food for an eligible elder by sponsoring a 'Rainbox Food Box.' Food boxes are delivered to Elders each spring and fall during semi-annual Foodruns through volunteers.
Additional ways to sponspor native elders include:
Firewood - firewood is delivered to elders and used as the primary source to heat homes in the winter and cook food.
Food Certificates - can be used by an elder to purchase food locally along with in-store medical items.
Feathers for the Forgotten Ones - support elders who are in poor health or are not eligable for a Rainbow Food Box. Food, blankets and requests for special medical needs are met by sponsorship.
Yarn - assist in purchasing yarns for Elders to weave into rugs which are then put into an Adopt A Native Elder Program Rug Catalog. Weaving provides the means for elders to sustain and support themselves in their traditional way. Native American elder made rugs are featured on the website and can be purchased on-line.
Medical Box - personal care, oral care, over-the-counter pain relief, wound care, skin care, etc.
Hygiene Boxes - hand sanitizer, soap, and disinfecting wipes.
School Supply Box - many elders take care of grandchildren and have a desire to help provide for their educational needs.
The program can provide elders with wheelchairs and walkers on a as needed basis.
Native elders on The Navajo reservation live in remote areas and are several hours from services.
A newsletter is sent out by the program to sponsors so that they can keep up with news and events on the program.
